Video Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women's History Month

A note

Hi. I'd like to participate. For example by contributing articles about significant women in the history of the disciplines of Anthropology or Linguistics, or the histories of Mexico or Denmark - the areas in which my expertise lies. I just don't really have any ideas right now. If you think of something I might contribute please feel free to contact me on my talkpage. ·?aunus·snun?w· 20:54, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Lists of lists

Someone left a message on WikiProject Comics about WikiWomen's History Month. If someone would like to help there are several articles about female comics creators to be started here and more in the list.--Cattus talk 22:14, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

There's also some articles that might be worth translating: fr:Femmes et salons littéraires, fr:Épistolière, fr:Prix Marguerite Audoux and fr:Prix République du Glamour.--Cattus talk 22:18, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
There are probably many historical women writers at fr:Catégorie:Femme de lettres française that don't have an article on English Wikipedia.--Cattus talk 22:53, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Not directly related to women's history, but I just noticed there is no List of women. It could look something like the List of lists of films, with links to other, more specific lists.--Cattus talk 23:21, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

I think that would be a good idea. There are dozens of Lists of women on Wikipedia. It should probably be titled List of lists of women though. Kaldari (talk) 06:47, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
I agree. On a related thing, I'm creating a Template:Lists of women by occupation, but it's propably going to get too large, so I was thinking about dividing it by area, like a Template:Lists of women in the arts. Any thoughts?--Cattus talk 12:38, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
Hi folks. I was bold and I've started this List of lists of women. PLEASE edit away! I'm working on adding things, it's just tough to organize. Be bold! :) SarahStierch (talk) 20:36, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Seeking to help

  • Hi there, I'd like to help with current activities. Since I have not yet quite sure what is all about for that I need a little advice. I would like to do few translations of articles at my local Wikipedias (serbocroatian, serbian). Where can I find most relevant articles not yet translated? I do not think universaly most relevant but maybe most interesting by your personal opinion because I am not familiar enough. If someone answer, let me know on my wall to please. Good luck.--MirkoS18 (talk) 19:39, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
  • Hi, I wish to inform you that I came to the new idea how I will take part in WikiWomen's History Month. I "created personal project" called "Feminine face of the Balkans" where I will draw several portraits of famous women from Western Balkans that do not have pictures available at wikipedia. Of course images will not be very high quality because I have no art education, but I will give my best. On my profile I will soon make gallery with new pictures so if someone wants to join she/he is more than welcome.--MirkoS18 (talk) 00:53, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
Mirko! That is so cool! I love that idea and I can't see what you create. What types of subjects interest you? Perhaps we can brainstorm some women's articles in English (i.e. biographies) that can be translated into Serbocroatian/Serbian. My brother is Serbian, so I'm even happier to have you involved in this :) SarahStierch (talk) 02:06, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Women in Ancient Greece

Women in Ancient Greece is a good article on the Spanish Wikipedia: es:La mujer en la Antigua Grecia.--Cattus talk 00:02, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

More articles, this time in the French Wikipedia. Some might be more useful than others:
  • fr:Statut des femmes à l'époque mérovingienne
  • fr:Femmes au Moyen Âge
  • fr:Condition des femmes sous la République de Weimar
  • fr:Chronologie du statut de la femme en Belgique
  • fr:Discrimination des femmes en France
  • fr:Histoire de l'éducation des filles en France
  • fr:Histoire des femmes en Indonésie
  • fr:Féminisation des noms de métiers en français

Sybil Plumlee

Inspired by WikiWomen's History Month (though I am not female), I am working on an article for Sybil Plumlee, a female police officer who became the oldest living member of the Portland Police Bureau. This spunky woman deserves an article and I hope that as a subject she meets notability requirements. The article is still under construction but once completed will hopefully benefit the project and encyclopedia. --Another Believer (Talk) 16:54, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Also, I created stubs for Lola Baldwin and Penny Harrington, both of whom deserve articles. Hope to expand soon. --Another Believer (Talk) 17:30, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
Great! I added Baldwin and Harrington to the to-do list page, too! And we don't care what gender you are - I'm just happy to have you participate! SarahStierch (talk) 17:42, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! Both articles would make great additions to the encyclopedia. I have finished the Sybil Plumlee article, for now (using online resources), so hopefully I can move on to another one soon. Not sure if you have a "WikiWomen's History Month" template for talk pages or not, but feel free to tag them as all three were inspired by this project. --Another Believer (Talk) 00:46, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

to-do list

Hi everyone! I have created a to-do list. PLEASE expand! Wikipedia:WikiWomen's History Month/To-do list SarahStierch (talk) 16:02, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

I just added about 50 missing women artists from the Grove Dictionary of Art. My intent was to stub them all out by the end of the month, but I've only done around 20 so far, so any help would be appreciated. Lithoderm 07:19, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Just pointing out and complimenting Finetooth's work on the Eliza Barchus article, which (I assume was) inspired by the WWHM message posted at WikiProject Oregon. --Another Believer (Talk) 04:40, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

perhaps overlooked articles

Looking around for interesting & perhaps overlooked articles for whatever means you use to feature them. I personally enjoyed learning about Mabel Stark... So far found:

  • Lisa Randall
  • Sofia Kovalevskaya
  • Anna Politkovskaya
  • Taslima Nasrin
  • Mabel Stark
  • Amy A. Chadwick (Chadwick Hall in Spelman college, Leonard Street Orphanage, etc.)
  • Virginia Randolph
  • Laura Wheeler Waring
  • Nella Larsen
  • Marie Bashkirtseff
  • Mary MacLane
  • GraniteStateGrump (talk) 03:33, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

Here's another perhaps overlooked article, Mignon Talbot may be the first woman, or at least American woman, to name a dinosaur, but it's hard to find any info about her, and on whether that is actually a fact. FunkMonk (talk) 15:58, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

France

I believe in my approach that there is no more place for the women on french wikipedia . I was extremely disappointed by the behavior of the french women of France who say to themselves feminist and united the other women. In fact Wikipediq becomes a male world and we should quite resigned but I am responsible only for my own person.

In maintaining English language I regret the censorship between us women. But I have now left Wikipedia for his male ice hockey climate. The wiki of France is men people shall see you, anyway I shall not be any more here. paix pour vous tous. Peace for you all, Frieden für Sie alle désolée les émotions....

--Mjblanco (talk) 16:19, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

Female dancers

In connection with Women's History Month 2014, some of us have been concentrating on improving the coverage of female dancers. In addition to creating a List of female dancers on a country-by-country basis, we have also been writing a fair number of new biographies, many of which relate to women of historical interest. We would appreciate any support the Women's History project can provide, including improvements to existing articles and the creation of new ones.--Ipigott (talk) 09:48, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Although we're making considerable progress on the female dancers, there are still quite a number of red links on the Wikipedia:WikiWomen's History Month/To-do list.--Ipigott (talk) 17:05, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Many of the dancers have appeared at "Did You Know". The project is running at one or two women on the main page with over 30 articles already created for display on International Women's Day. We need dozens more if we are to make a significant impact during the month. There is currently a picture of a dancer on the main page now. With more help we could try and aim to get someone to notice the unusual idea of having the same number of women as men on the main page. Willing to help if someone has an article that needs nominating. Ping me or @Ipigott or @RosieStep et al Victuallers (talk)

Re-arrangement

I restructured WHM's mainpage, renamed some of the subpages, and created some new subpages. I wanted to bring cohesion and ease in navigation to WHM. The new NavBox will help, too. --Rosiestep (talk) 21:42, 30 November 2014 (UTC)

Wow, quite a facelift - looks very nice! I appreciate that! My only concern is that the event pages get lost in the box on the right - I'm concerned that newbies (who are often the attendees and organizers) might no notice it easily. BTW, I usually start promoting WWHM in January..so it's right around the corner. Missvain (talk) 18:30, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
I was thinking about that, too, how to make the "current/upcoming/just finished" year's event page noticeable January-April of each year, when it gets the most attention. I think with just a bit more tweaking, it can be fashioned pretty easily. I'll try and sort it out over the weekend. --Rosiestep (talk) 22:06, 6 December 2014 (UTC)

2015 Outcomes

There do not appear to be instructions on the outcomes page, nor is the talk page activated, so I am hoping my questions here will get to whoever they need to get to.

  • 1) I am assuming it does not matter if articles were created in February, as long as they appear in March DYK they should be included?
  • 2) Likewise, I am assuming articles are only included if they were actually created in March?
  • 3) What does portal signify? (The articles I have written are part of Africa, Biography, Feminist, Indigenous peoples of North America, Mexico, and Women's history projects and thus the appropriate portals for those). Or do you mean the articles were featured by the portal? Do you want the article name listed or the portal listed?
  • 4) I listed Salvador Alvarado as he was a feminist and wrote some of the first laws protecting women in Mexico. If in your vernacular he is not eligible for inclusion because of his gender, please advise and I shall remove him.
  • 5) How does one designate when the first surname is what would be used in proper alpha order. This occurs for both my entries on Verónica Cruz and Jalil Khamis. I marked them with a comment, as I did not know if there "is a program for that."

Thanks :) SusunW (talk) 01:48, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Wikisource looking for suggestions for works to reproduce for March

The English Wikisource community is looking to support this project, and is asking for suggestions of public domain works to be reproduced through s:Wikisource:Proofread of the Month. Please feel free to add suggestions to s:Wikisource:Requested texts and we will choose some to transcribe and publish through March. Thanks for any suggestions that you have to make. -- billinghurst sDrewth 12:20, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

Multilingual Women's History Month in March

There has been a discussion on the WiR talk page about embarking on a multilingual approach to Women in Red in March. The general idea is that we should follow in the footsteps of Wikipedia Asian Month by encouraging other language versions of Wikipedia to participate in our editathon. It has been suggested that we could start with some of the European languages with Latin alphabets which have proved successful in WAM but we could also think of including other important language versions such as Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Russian. For each language version we will need at least one coordinator to translate the invitations and support pages and to provide assistance to participants. We welcome any ideas on how we should proceed as well as any offers of support for other languages. The topics of Activists and Feminists appear suitable for all the languages but it might be useful to extend our scope to attract users interested in creating articles on women active in other areas. Please respond here.--Ipigott (talk) 11:25, 17 November 2016 (UTC)

Thanks to all those who have responded. We've arranged things along these lines. We look forward to your contributions.--Ipigott (talk) 11:03, 24 February 2017 (UTC)
